If this is not an option we can continue with STEPS until graduation.

School Based Counseling

Project Courage offers you and your loved ones the necessary resources to Support you during the school year. Our assessment and evaluation process is second to none, and during this process, we focus on the student, their loved ones, and environment to establish a program and routine that truly gives them the resources to succeed. We extract vital information and utilize these tools to elicit real change within our clients.

  • Assessment – We conduct a biopsychosocial assessment with every student. This helps to identify and uncover issues, establish realistic goals and create a unique treatment plan.
  • Individual Counseling – We help students by exploring their substance use and the impact it has on their life. Then, we arm students with new coping mechanisms and relapse prevention skills to help them in the future.
  • Referral – When one of our students needs a higher level of treatment(Intensive Outpatient Program, Residential Program), the School Based Counselor will work with the student and family to find the appropriate treatment services within our broad network of partners.
  • Class Presentations – We use Psychoeducation as a tool to teach students “Prevention Strategy” and give them information to education themselves on topics such as: Understanding Addiction, Factors that Influence Addiction, What Drugs Are, How Drugs Work, and Substance Use Prevention.
  • Family Work – If the student agrees, we will involve and work with the family unit to help educate and inform them on the client’s substance use, progress within our programs, and setting family goals to strive for and achieve together.
  • Guidance Coordination –  We collaborate and coordinate care with the school guidance department and other social workers to provide our students with the best possible treatment program.

“Project Courage really works hard to create individualized programs for students struggling in the traditional high school model. In a matter of two months, they were able to work closely with the high school team of general education, special education and support teachers to design a program for a student struggling to attend school and back on the high school track. Relationship building, respect and hard conversations are the essential elements the staff displayed in connecting with students. The Project Courage team is creative, and they think outside the box. They provide students with what they need in order to get back on track. They empower students to own their problems, resolve the issues and feel successful. I high recommend Project Courage as an agency to partner with in supporting students with mental health issues.” – Madeline Illinger, Director of Special Education and Student Support Services Westbrook Schools
